Superintendents 1924 – Present

Bill “Doc” Keaton
Doc moved to Barre from California in the mid 1950s after he graduated from veterinary school at Cornell. He loved golf and developed an immediate interest in the 9-hole Barre Country Club and volunteered his time towards the maintenance of the course for over 25 years. Doc was the course superintendent when the course expanded to 18 holes and was honored by the Club in 1976 for his efforts. Doc left CCB in 1984, one year before the VT Amateur was held in 1985, hosted by his son and successor, Billy Keaton.

Bill Keaton, Jr.
Bill worked summers at the club for as long as he could remember, picking rocks out of the fairways in his younger years and progressing to doing a little bit of everything maintenance related. Later on, he received a Bachelor of Science degree in Plant and Soil Science from UVM in 1980 and attended the 8 week Winter School for Turf Managers at UMass Amherst in 1981. His first official season as the Superintendent was in 1981. While here, Bill ran the course while his wife, Tammi, ran the restaurant. They lived upstairs above the bar while friends, Bill and Doris Ann Ross also lived upstairs on the other side of the clubhouse. In his words, “What a wonderful life!!”.

Billy Evans
Billy was born in Kearny, New Jersey. His family moved to Barre, VT when he was 8 years old where he learned to golf at age 12 beside his grandmother, Thelma. At age 16, his career on the golf course began at Northfield Country Club under the supervision of Mike Dukette. In the summer of 1980, Billy worked under Billy Keaton, Jr at the Country Club of Barre.
